Producer Info

In Rwanda, we partner with Muraho Trading Co. who help local co-ops boost quality, earn better prices, and reach new markets. One of the most unique stations we buy coffee from is Gisheke, tucked away in the Nyamasheke District and only accessible by boat across the stunning Lake Kivu. Around 40% of the cherries processed here come from Mushungwe Island—delivered by boat, just like everything else at this off-the-beaten-path gem.

Gisheke’s location, nestled between two steep hills facing Lake Kivu and Idjwi Island, creates ideal airflow for drying naturally processed coffees. This unique microclimate, combined with the station’s meticulous approach, makes for some truly exceptional lots.

Every cherry at Gisheke is hand-sorted to remove underripes, floaters, and any defects before pulping. The sorted cherries are then dried slowly over 30 days on raised beds—constantly turned during the day and covered at night to protect from moisture.

Once a rundown site, Gisheke is now a beautifully restored station producing some of Rwanda’s finest coffees—with breathtaking views, island deliveries, and even the occasional swim-by from Lake Kivu’s famous cows.
